Something isn’t Quite Right in The World

Something isn’t Quite Right is a kids short story book. The story revolves around three friends who arrive at a desert after a long journey from the airport. The climate in the desert was hot during the day and cool at night, this story is written below ideal for you to read comfortably

A hot desert wind blew as the three members of the Tiger Team got out of the big black car. The air conditioning had kept it pleasantly cool on the long drive from the airport, so the burning heat came as even more of a shock to the three friends.

Ahmed, the white-robed driver, pointed at an enormous crater in the sand and said, ‘Mr Luke, you will find your uncle down there. He is expecting you.’

‘Right, let’s go!’ cried Luke, hoisting his ruck- sack on to his shoulder. Lizzie and Patrick picked up theirs and followed him to the edge of the crater. They gazed down into the depths, and gave a long whistle of astonishment.

They were looking at a man-made valley with a pyramid about thirty meters high inside it. The pyramid had lain buried in the desert sand until a few weeks ago, when Luke’s uncle, Professor Augustus Carter, had discovered and excavated it with the help of his team of assistants. Professor Carter was an Egyptologist. He hoped to find valuable treasures in the pyramid.

‘What does your uncle actually look like?’ asked Lizzie.

Luke hadn’t seen him for a while, and had to think for a moment. ‘I think he’s got dark hair and a beard. And he always wears two pairs of glasses: one on his nose and one on his forehead.’

It was absolutely silent around the pyramid, and the tents where the professor and his col- leagues lived all seemed to be empty.

‘They’re probably inside the pyramid,’ Lizzie guessed.

The three friends climbed down the sandy slope. They left their rucksacks near the tents and marched up to the pyramid’s entrance, which was not much more than a hole. Inside, they were met by a deep droning sound, like an organ, and a sweet smell. Suddenly, they heard a shuffling and scratching noise. It seemed to be coming from one of the dark passageways. ‘What… what’s that?’ cried Patrick in horror.

Luke mustered all his courage and called, ‘Hello! Uncle Augustus! Are you in there?’

All of a sudden, lots of people hurtled out of the passageway and into the open air. They looked like remote-controlled puppets as they rushed stiffly past the Tiger Team and fell gasping into the hot sand.

‘What… what’s happened to them? Patrick asked in amazement.

The people now lay motionless. Luke took a photograph of them with his Polaroid camera. Then he looked around. ‘Where’s my uncle?’ he cried.
